Today’s economy is causing concern for many. People are getting laid off due to down-sizing or companies closing their doors.
As Christians, we have a choice. We can go along with the undercurrent of woes and fear, or we can rise above it and choose to believe that God is working all things for good.
Think of Joseph. His brothers sold him into slavery. Joseph could have let bitterness get the best of him – from a human standpoint, he had every right. But he made a choice to see God’s hand in the situation. In Genesis 45:5, when Joseph was talking to his brothers, it says “But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life.” He had a pretty mature outlook, don’t you think?
Has today’s economy left you with feelings of bitterness toward your employer? Or, are you looking at your situation as an OPPORTUNITY to do something different? What options do you have now that you didn’t recognize when you felt secure in your job? When you are comfortable, you go on day to day, and don't really look at other possibilities. But sometimes God wants you to move into something new.
No one likes adversity. However, if you can look at the situation with an open mind, and see the good things that can come out of it (I say "can" because you need to be willing to let those good things take root), you will be much further ahead than if you allow yourself to wallow. You may need to wallow for a short time – it's like a grieving process – but don't let it go on an on.
What have you learned from this whole experience? Has your faith grown or do you feel this situation has made you a better person? Are you rethinking where your security is?
Do you have more compassion toward others who are in the same boat? Has your experience helped you to be more understanding and reach out to others more?
These are questions you can ask that will help you focus on the good. God wants us to grow in our faith and not stay stuck in bitterness or disappointment. He wants us to believe that He will make lemonade out of life’s lemons.
Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” When we really believe that, the economy will not get us down. We will look at it as a challenge to see what God has for us next.
