How To Choose A Domain Name

Anytime you have a website, you need a domain name, but how to choose one?  A domain is your address on the web.  It is the address people will type in to find your website.

How do you choose a domain name?   There are a few things you should consider when you are deciding.  First, a domain name should reflect what your business is all about.  If your business is selling candles, you will want to include the word candles as part of the name.

Do not pick an exceptionally long name.   You want people to remember the name, and the shorter it is, the greater chance that they will.    So, in keeping with the example of candles, you might want to choose “simply candles” over  “beautiful candles to decorate your home with.”   Keep it easy to remember.

You will also want to choose words that have only one spelling, if possible.   For example, “natural light” can be confused with “natural lite.”   Think about it from your customer’s viewpoint and make it clear.

Another recommendation is to choose .com instead of .net or other variation.  Everyone is so used to putting .com at the end of the address, they do so without thinking.  You do not want to lose customers because they make a wrong assumption and cannot find you.

Domains will  cost between $5 – $10 per year and there are many places you can get one – just do a Google search.  Take some thought as to how to choose a domain name so your name will serve you well.
