To many baby boomers, retirement can be a scary thing. They are not sure how well they will do living on their decreased income. It can be an exciting but uncertain time in your life.
As one of the baby boomers, you are probably thinking about retirement or maybe are already there. Retirement can be a wonderful time of life as long as you take some steps toward that end.
Baby boomers have redefined retirement. Most do not want retirement to mean sitting around all day doing nothing. You might enjoy that for a day or so, but not for a lifetime. When reaching retirement, whether it is early retirement or on schedule, many are looking for ways to fill their time with things that matter. Many volunteer. Others get a part-time job doing something that they really enjoy. Some are fortunate enough to be able to travel and visit places they have dreamed about.
Today, many baby boomers are choosing to start a home based business in their retirement years or pre-retirement years. They are finding that, through running a business, they can still have the freedom and flexibility they wanted in retirement but also are happy to have some structure in their lives. A home based business offers both. It also provides you with some extra income to make your retirement years ones you can enjoy. Traveling, eating dinner out, and giving to others are all things you can do if you have the money.
According to the Small Business Administration, Americans aged 55 to 64 start small businesses at a higher rate than any other age group. This should be encouraging to baby boomers as others in their age group are certainly doing it!
Baby boomers have a wealth of experience and knowledge. Why not put it to good use by starting your own business? You can be sharing something with others, doing something you enjoy and earning some extra income all at the same time.
Whatever you choose to do – volunteering, working a part-time job or starting a business – do something you feel strongly about. Retirement is the time to enjoy your life, and at the same time, give back by helping others. You will find fulfillment in your days and you can’t beat that.
How will you spend your retirement years?
