Baby Boomers and Their Options

Let's talk about baby boomers and the options they have for starting a home based business.

The first issue I would like to talk about is “what can you do as a home business?”  Many baby boomers would love to run a business from home, but don’t have any idea what they could do.

I know this was my problem when I was starting out.  I had wanted to have my own business for years, but always got stuck at the step of what I could do.

There are MANY options.   The important thing is to find the one that “fits” you.  Look at the actual details of what you will be doing in the business.  Is this something that you would enjoy and that would use your gifts and skills?  Does it suit your personality?  Are the hours conducive to where you are in life?  It is important to get started out in something that basically matches up with who you are and the lifestyle you live.  Get started on the right foot.

Sell a Product

This can be your own product or someone else’s.  It can also be a physical product (like a candle) or a digital product (like an ebook.)

You can join a direct sales company and sell their products as a distributor or consultant.  This is probably one of the easiest ways to get started, as the business is all set up, and most direct sales opportunities offer training.  So, you kind of have the best of both worlds.  You have your own business, but are not in it “alone.”

You can sell a product you have created, such as candles, soaps, clothing, etc.

Many baby boomers have a good amount of knowledge in a particular area, so write and sell an ebook and share your knowledge with others.

You can start an online business such as affiliate marketing (selling other people’s products and earning a commission whenever you make a sale).  Affiliate marketing can be done for either physical products or digital products.  You become an affiliate of the owner/producer of the product, make sales and earn commissions.  This is a fairly inexpensive way to get started in an online business.

You can also sell products on Ebay, the worldwide marketplace.  Purchase products at wholesale prices, and then resell on Ebay to make a profit.

Offer a Service

Next, you could start a business offering a service such as bookkeeping, proofreading, child care, web design, consulting or coaching, and the list goes on and on.

If you have a skill that others need, this is a great way to start a business doing something you enjoy and that brings a sense of fulfillment.

As you can see, there are many varieties of opportunities, just as there are people.  Choose the one that best fits your lifestyle, interests, and skills.
